Japanese Language Institutions

Classes in Higher Education Institutions in Japan are conducted in Japanese and your Japanese language skills and knowledge must be decent and well.  Japanese language schools are schools for studying Japanese. They provide preparatory and general courses/programs for pupils desiring to continue their education at a junior college, specialized/professional training college, university (Undergraduate), and graduate schools in Japan. 

Types of Japanese Language Institutions

There are two types of Japanese language institutes –
  • Preparatory Japanese Language Courses Offered by private Universities
  • Japanese language institutions providing Japanese language courses or Japanese language departments in Universities, Junior Colleges and Graduate Schools

Preparatory Japanese Language Courses Offered by Private Universities

The Private Universities and Junior colleges are the controlling bodies for these courses.  Such institutions teach Japanese language to students who want to go for higher education in Japan. These courses are regular courses within the university curriculum as determined by the School Education Law. The primary aim of these courses is to offer preparatory education and training in Japanese language, Japanese society, lifestyle and culture, and other important areas to international students who desire to attend junior colleges or universities courses/programmes, either as students or researchers.

Admission Requirements: Students who have completed their 12 years of education (primary and secondary) are eligible for admission to Japanese Language Institution. 

Duration: 1 to 2 years

Status of Residence: The residence status to students studying in these courses is “College Student’’ 

Curriculum: Japanese Language, Japanese Society and Culture, and even English.

In a few countries school education (primary and secondary) is completed in 10 or 11 years. Students who correspond to this case need to either-
  • Take admission in a higher education institution in his or her country and study there for at least the minimum number of years needed to bring the cumulative years of education to 12 or more.
  • Take admission in one of the University Preparatory Course and complete a course of preliminary study for university entrance designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Japanese Language Institutions

Japanese Language Institutions or Japanese Language Departments provides Japanese Language Courses at all the levels of educations, right from -Junior Colleges, University and Graduate Schools.

International Students who want to study at higher education institution in Japan may go for Japanese language institution offering Japanese language courses as a preparation prior to their undergraduate or graduate studies. 
The admission criteria vary depending upon the course and institutions
Duration: 2 to 5 years

Status of Residence: The residence status to students studying in these courses is “College Student’’.

Admission Procedure for Japanese Language Institutions

Contact the respective Japanese language institution. Request for the application form. Fill in the form and mention your choice of course and return it back to the concerned Japanese language institution along with the school transcripts and certificates, medical certificate, proof of financial resources, and passport-size photographs. If you are selected, you’ll receive a ‘Certificate of Admission’. Pay the fees. You’ll receive a ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ for a residence status. Apply for visa at your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate with the ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ and ‘Certificate of Admission’.
