Examination for Japanese University Admission

The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (日本留学試験 Nihon Ryūgaku Shiken) or EJU, started in 2002, is a standardized admission/entrance test for non-native speakers who wish to study in Japan higher education institutions. The EJU measures the Japanese language skills and abilities of the international students. 

EJU encompasses four subject tests: 
  • Japanese as a Foreign Language
  • Science- This test covers Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
  • Japan and the World
  • Mathematics
Candidates can choose their subject tests as per the requisites of the Japanese higher education institutions they want to gain admission to. The examination is offered in Japanese or English except for the Japanese as a Foreign Language test that is organised in Japanese only and candidates are required to mention at the time of applying their preferred examination language.  

There are many Japanese higher education institutions that take into consideration the EJU scores for admittance. 

There are several institutions that provide entry permission before arriving in Japan on the basis of EJU scores. 

You can sit for EJU two or more times, but the scores of only one EJU session will be considered for admissions to institutions in Japan.

Format of EJU

EJU comprises of 4 subject tests: Japanese as a Foreign Language, Japan and the World, Science, and Mathematics. Candidates who go for the Science test are required to select 2 of the 3 categories Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and those who opt for Mathematics test are required to choose 1 out of the 2 courses given.

Japanese as a Foreign Language

This exam tests the Japanese language skills of international candidates applying to the institutions in Japan. It consist of 2 sections- 
  • Writing
  • Comprehension- Listening and Reading comprehension

Section 1: Writing

This section measures the candidate’s ability to write his/her thoughts clearly and coherently with appropriate rationale. In this section, a topic/issue is given and the candidates are required to write about it, express their viewpoints, and reach to a conclusion.

Section 2: Comprehension

The comprehension section encompasses reading, listening, and reading plus listening comprehension. This section measures the candidate’s ability to understand and interpret the information or sounds given. Draw conclusions and grasp the central point of the text presented.
  • Reading Comprehension- This part consists of written material and visual representation of a text-can be in the form of graph or chart.
  • Listening Comprehension- This part comprises of lectures, presentation or speeches.
  • Reading and Listening comprehension- This part makes use of both the sounds as well as visual information.

Science

This subject test encompasses Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This subject test measures the candidate’s academic ability and skills in science.
  • Physics Test- The questions in this test are from following topics-Mechanics, Energy and momentum, Forces and motion, thermodynamics, waves, sound, light, electromagnetism, electric field and current, magnetic field, electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic waves.
  • Chemistry Test- The questions in this test are from following topics- Chemical nature of substances: Inorganic and Organic, State of substances, Chemical reaction, and Structure of matter.
  • Biology Test- The questions in this test are from following topics- Continuity of life: Cell, Reproduction and embryonic development, heredity, environment and biological responses, organism and substances, and biotechnology.

Japan and the World

This subject test assesses the candidate’s knowledge about contemporary Japan. It tests whether the candidates are able to think rationally and critically about basic issues/problems in modern international society.
The questions in this test are taken from following topics-Politics, Economy and Society, Geography, and History.

Mathematics

This subject test measures the candidate’s mathematical abilities and skills. It comprises of 2 courses-
  • Course 1: For Undergraduate faculties and department and requires basic knowledge of math
  • Course 2: For Undergraduate faculties and department and requires advanced knowledge of math
Course 1: The topics are- Equations and Inequalities, quadratic equations, figures and measurements, plane figures, set logics and theory, and Probability.

Course 2: The topics are- Equations and Inequalities, quadratic equations, figures and measurements, plane figures, set logics and theory, Probability, expressions and proofs, points and lines, circles, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, concept of differential and integration, sequence of numbers, vectors, limits, differential calculus, derivatives, integral calculus, matrices and their application, and expressions and curves.

EJU Registration and Fees

The EJU application form along with the bulletin can be acquired from the major bookstores all over Japan. 
You can also get the application form at various overseas locations.

EJU Registration Process in Japan

Step 1: Get the EJU bulletin from the authorised bookstores. The EJU encloses the EJU application form. 
Step 2: Fill in the application form with all the necessary details
Step 3: Pay the examination fee using the prescribed Japanese Postal Services fund transfer form
Step 4: Send in your application form along with your photograph from a Japanese post office by a registered postal service called "kan'i kakitome".  

EJU Registration Process Overseas

Step 1: Get the application form from the representative in your city.
Step 2:   Fill in the application form completely and pay the required fees.
Step 3: Submit the form along with your 3 photographs either by mail or in person. Get in touch with the overseas representative to know about the details of the same. 

** The photo must not be more than 6 months old and should include your upper with solid background. The photograph must be 4cm in height and 3cm in width.

Applications From Countries Not Administered EJU

Applications from countries not administered EJU can be accepted if the candidate holds a proxy in the country or area who can handle the whole application process and understands the language that will be used to impart instructions in the test room.

EJU Examination Voucher

In Japan

The examination voucher will be received by "Registered Mail" to the address you have mentioned on your EJU application form.  Do sign when you get the mail. Check the voucher whether all the details mentioned in it are correct.
In case you’ve changed your address, please submit a Notification of change of address "Tenkyo-Todoke” to the nearest Post Office.

Overseas

The examination voucher is issued at the time of registration.

EJU is conducted in 17 cities spanning over 14 countries or regions.

EJU Scoring and Results

The Writing Section of the Japanese as a Foreign language is given rating S, A, B and C, wherein each corresponds to a particular score. Each of Levels A, B and C has two grades: higher and lower.

 Score Rating
 50 Level S-Well organised and clearly addressed. Usage of refined expressions in language.
 45 and 40 Level A-Well organised and clearly addressed. Usage of appropriate expressions in language.
 35 and 30 Level B-Well organised. Usage of inappropriate expressions in language.
 25, 20 Level C-Roughly addressed the subject and Usage of inappropriate expressions in language.
 10 Level D-Not addressed the topic, disorganised and errors in language
 0 NA-Does not meet the rating conditions.

Score Reports

Candidates who have taken the exam in Japan- You’ll get the score reports by the “registered mail” on the address mentioned in your application form. 
The score reports are sent via postal service from JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization). 
Also, EJU certificate of scores is issued to the Japanese residents only by JASSO. You can get the ‘EJU Certificate of Scores’ either via internet  or postal service .

Candidates who have taken the exam Overseas- You’ll get the score report by the Overseas representative. 

Validity Period: EJU scores are valid for two years.

Special Arrangements

Candidates with physical disability can get special accommodation. You need to contact JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) at 03-6407-7457 (telephone) or the application office overseas to obtain the directions/instructions before putting forward your application. Along with the application form, a medical certificate is too required (in some cases).
